Ammonia is irritating and corrosive. Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia in air causes immediate burning of the nose, throat and respiratory tract. This can cause bronchiolar and alveolar edema, and airway destruction resulting in respiratory distress or failure.Chronic respiratory irritation, asthma, lung fibrosis, and dermatitis are just a few of the adverse consequences that employees may experience as a result of occupational exposure to ammonia or ammonia compounds. To improve safety in work settings containing this ubiquitous refrigerant, OSHA has created general industry safety requirements that protect both employees and employers. Students learn how to be safe in the presence of ammonia and ammonia-containing compounds, as well as what to do in the case of exposure, during the Ammonia Awareness for General Industry course.
