HAZWOPER training is designed for workers who are exposed to hazardous materials as part of their job. This training will provide important safety and health information to those workers who perform cleanup, emergency response or corrective actions in an environment affected by hazardous materials.
Some of these jobs include working around hazardous chemical leaks and chemical fires. It also involves excavating sites where there is hazardous waste is buried.
Some workers have a high exposure to hazardous substances as part of their job requirement. Such workers are required to complete 40 hours of HAZWOPER training. Those having a lower exposure must complete 24 hours of HAZWOPER training. All employees working with hazardous substances are required to take eight hours of HAZWOPER refresher training courses every year.
Our online HAZWOPER training gives you the flexibility to log into the course at a time of your choosing. You may easily progress with your training at your own pace.
Our training course features the following:
Audio narration
Interactive exercises
Real-world learning examples
24/7 live support
Most of your HAZWOPER training can be completed online. However, OSHA does require some physical classes as well. These classes have to be supervised by a qualified instructor. Students taking a 40-hour course are required to have a minimum of three days of field experience. For students of 24-hour courses, at lease one day of field experience is required.
This requirement helps workers to learn about hazardous materials and how to use personal protective gear. You may consult your employer on the length of field training you should get, depending on the nature of your work.
OSHA has outlined the types of operations in its HAZWOPER standard. HAZWOPER training is required for the following operations:
Governmental cleanup operations where there is risk of exposure to hazardous materials, like in an uncontrolled hazardous waste site.
Remedial measures associated with cleanup operations at locations regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Operations at all other non-TSD plants that may create hazardous waste.
Operations linked to hazardous waste carried out at treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) plants falling under the RCRA regulations.
Disaster response operations where a large population may come under threat of being exposed to hazardous materials, like during a radiation leak at a nuclear power plant.
The type of HAZWOPER course you require will depend on your job role, work responsibilities and your risk exposure to hazardous materials. Most entry level HAZWOPER employees will be required to complete 40 Hours of HAZWOPER training.

If you have completed either 40 hours or 24 hours of initial HAZWOPER training, then OSHA will require you to complete eight additional hours of HAZWOPER refresher training every year.
OSHA has comprehensive standards in place for HAZWOPER occupations. They apply to a wide range of job functions that expose workers to hazardous materials contamination.
Some of the jobs that need 40 hours of HAZWOPER training include:
Equipment Operations
General Labor
Supervisory Roles
Other general site operations
On-site Managerial and Supervisory Roles
If you have taken the 40-hour online HAZWOPER course, you are also required to complete at least three days on the field. While on the field, you must be directly supervised by a trained and experienced supervisor. Managerial and supervisory level workers are required to complete at least eight additional hours of specialized training when they start their jobs.
Workers who go on site occasionally to perform limited duties must take 24-hour HAZWOPER training. These may include:
Hazardous Materials Technicians
Hazardous Materials Specialists
On-site Incident Leaders
Managers and Supervisors
Some of the limited roles these workers perform may include:
Ground Water Monitoring
Land Surveying
Geophysical Surveying
24-Hour HAZWOPER training is also useful for those workers who regularly work in areas where contamination levels remain below permissible exposure limits. You must have at least one day of field experience. This field experience should be directly supervised by a trained and experienced supervisor.
